Languages
Learning a foreign language is a liberation from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures. A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It should also provide opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and read great literature in the original language. Language teaching should provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries.
Resources for homeAt St George's, we use the resource Rigolo in our French lessons. Although this cannot be accessed from home, there are a wealth of resources available to help you continue learning languages and loving languages from home:
Recent Highlights in LanguagesOn Bastille Day, 14 July, we held a French afternoon in KS2 where the children were completely immersed in French. We had helpers from Albany High school join us to deliver a series of sessions in each classroom. The children explored French food, French colours, French directions and even made their own French cafe! See the sideshow below for more of what we got up to:
Bastille DayExtra Curricular OpportunitiesWe currently offer a Languages Club to both KS1 and KS2. This is a fun, relaxed club, where the children learn some of the language and experience some of the cultures around the world.
