Art & Design

What does Art & Design look like at St George's?

In line with our school mission statement, we aim for children to be determined and confident in their learning, stimulate creativity, imagination and inventiveness. We aim to give children the skills, concepts and knowledge necessary for them to express responses to ideas and experiences in a visual or tactile form and to fire their imagination as a fundamental means of personal expression. Throughout school, we aim to engage, inspire and challenge children, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art. As they progress, they will be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

Art Focus Week January 2023

In January 2023 St Georges went off timetable, from EYFS to Year 6, to celebrate and explore art, geography, history and music. Throughout the week the children were given the opportunity to create new art, enhancing not only their own skills but also the school environment.

Home learning opportunities

All classes send home a Homework Menu that include home learning activities based around their topic. Parents are encouraged to research or create art pieces with their children. Children are encouraged to share knowledge and experiences regarding Art galleries or workshops experienced. This home learning is then shared and celebrated with their teachers and peers. Seesaw is used to share children’s learning with parents and they often comment on what their child has produced in Art lessons or refer to an artist or art period. Parents are also encouraged to share any home learning through Seesaw. Children are actively encouraged to take any opportunity to sketch so that this key skill can be developed.
