Our Vision

At St Georges C of E Primary School our aim throughout our work in Mathematics is to uphold the school’s mission statement: Be determined and confident, as God will be with you, inspiring us to learn, care and share through work, play and prayer.   

We encourage children to be determined and resilient as they face each challenge set to them. Maths is designed to develop their confidence through small, incremental steps to ensure a mastery of each new concept. 

Mathematics is a creative and highly interconnected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.

Mastery Maths 

After extensive research and training we have created a curriculum that is based on mastery of mathematical concepts, gaining greater depth in children’s understanding as well as producing confident, resilient and enthusiastic learners.

In every lesson we use the teaching sequence of teaching new concepts through concrete – pictorial– abstract, which is the basis of our planning.

We also ensure our teaching and learning is based on the 5 main components of mastery:

• Variation- highlighting the essential components of a concept by varying the questioning and activity to produce intelligent practise. 
• Fluency- The ability to quickly recall and use number facts.
• Mathematical Thinking-Looking for patterns, relationships and connections in mathematical problems.
• Representation and Structure- Showing the mathematical concept in different ways.
• Coherence- Lessons are broken down in to small steps to ensure full understanding.

Red Rose Maths

The school has chosen the Red Rose Maths scheme due to its core mastery approaches than run through every lesson, its exploratory approach to learning, and the pedagogical and mathematical foundations that underpin its creation. The scheme aligns with the 2014 National Curriculum in England and provides detailed progression documents, diagnostic assessment materials, and resources for teaching and learning across all year groups from EYFS to Year 6. Red Rose Maths promotes a deep and broad understanding of mathematical concepts by fostering exploration, reasoning, and problem-solving skills. The scheme's emphasis on concrete, pictorial, and abstract representations supports the development of a secure foundation in mathematics for all students and is one that is consistent throughout every year group. The Scheme provides: Progression Documents: Details the progression of key mathematical concepts from EYFS to Year 6. Assessment Materials: Assessments to identify strengths and areas for development that align with the units covered at points throughout the year. Teaching Resources: Manipulatives, visual aids, and technology resources to support teaching. Problem-Solving Focus: Encourages students to solve problems independently and collaboratively. Contextual Learning: Provides real-world contexts for mathematical concepts, enhancing relevance and understanding

Extra Curricular

During the year we will be offering a Maths Challenge Club to Year 3/4. This will give children the opportunity to intriguing, fun maths problems in groups as well as engage in mathematical conversation. 

In June 2022, we held a STEM week in school. This brought together Maths, Science, Design and Computing subjects in a focus on sustainability. We looked at different areas where we could look after our world for the future and used skills from all the STEM subjects to complete tasks and workshops. We hope to hold another STEM week in the future.
